Marvel star Robert Downey Jr. expresses concern over the potential unauthorized use of his likeness through artificial intelligence and deepfake technology. Downey, known for his iconic role as Iron Man in several Marvel films, warns that he intends to take legal action if executives attempt to digitally recreate his character without permission.
In a recent podcast interview, Downey discussed the growing issues of AI and deepfakes in entertainment. He is currently starring in a Broadway play about artificial intelligence themes called “McNeal.” When asked about executives hypothetically using his image, Downey joked that his law firm would remain active even after his death to pursue lawsuits.
However, Downey says he trusts the current leadership at Marvel Studios, where he portrays Tony Stark/Iron Man, to make ethical decisions. He notes that a small group of executives make all creative choices at Marvel. Downey believes they would respect his wishes regarding his character.
As an investor in AI companies himself, Downey acknowledges the technology’s potential benefits but stresses the importance of moral leadership. He looks for companies whose management seems dedicated to developing AI responsibly. Downey says ethical considerations should take priority over financial gains from new technologies.
Downey is set to reprise his role as Iron Man in upcoming Marvel films “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” cementing his status among the franchise’s top stars. While protecting control over his digital likeness, Downey remains optimistic about AI’s role in entertainment if developed conscientiously.
