DC Studios has canceled plans for Wonder Woman 3 as it restructures its movie universe. Actress Connie Nielsen, who played Queen Hippolyta in the first two Wonder Woman movies, expressed disappointment with the decision. She felt the franchise had been successful both critically and financially.
The Wonder Woman films starring Gal Gadot had been well received. The 2017 original movie made over $800 million worldwide and gained good reviews. However, the 2020 sequel faced challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic. It was released during the health crisis and received mixed critiques, which may have caused uncertainty about another installment.
Nielsen defended the second film in her recent interview. She noted it came out during the pandemic, which subjected it to extra scrutiny. Nielsen also pointed out the Wonder Woman movies had relatively low budgets compared to other DC projects. This could have made them more economically viable choices for further films.
DC Studios is now led by James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-CEOs. They are rebooting the DC movie universe. This has led to an unclear future for some established characters and franchises. Reports say the original Justice League members might not reprise their roles. Earlier this year, Gal Gadot had said she was working on Wonder Woman 3 with Gunn and Safran, but that claim was later dismissed.
While Wonder Woman 3 is no longer moving forward, the character could still appear elsewhere. An Amazon-focused TV series called “Paradise Lost” is in development. It may take inspiration from Patty Jenkins’ proposed Amazons spin-off movie. Going forward, fans will watch how upcoming DC movies under Gunn, like the planned 2025 Superman reboot, shape the new cinematic universe and whether beloved heroes like Wonder Woman have a place in it.
