With just days until the presidential election, political comedian Bill Maher is urging undecided voters to consider the nation’s strong economic indicators when choosing between candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Maher acknowledged it’s difficult for the small number of undecided voters who remain torn between the options. However, he argued that perceptions of the economy don’t match up with current data.
Government figures show unemployment is low at 4 percent. Average yearly income per person stands at a solid $85,000. “An economy with unemployment this low and income this high is clearly doing well,” Maher said during his HBO show. Yet Democrats have struggled to effectively convey this message to voters, focusing more on opposition to Trump than promoting their own economic platform, according to Maher.
Maher criticized Harris for not offering a strong, positive vision beyond being the alternative to Trump. Meanwhile, concerns about progressive politics could influence the election results, Maher noted. Some voters may hesitate to support a candidate closely aligned with “woke” issues, which Maher said Democrats have had trouble communicating in a way that resonates with moderate voters.
Despite faults with Harris’s campaign, Maher ultimately endorsed her, saying “let’s not forget, ‘I’m not Trump’ is still a really great reason” to vote for someone. He wrapped up by warning undecided voters that choosing Trump could lead the country down a dangerous path under “the rule of a mad king.”
