Actor John Lawson has revealed that his character, Kano, will make a surprise return in the upcoming film “Mortal Kombat 2.” This return marks a tremendous turnaround from his death in the first film.
In a recent interview with The Direct, Lawson discussed how death will change Kano’s character journey in the highly anticipated sequel. “Death alters you,” he remarked, referring to “Kano 2.0.” Lawson highlighted Kano’s unpredictable nature, noting, “Kano’s alliances can change at the drop of a hat, and that’s certainly true in the second one.”
The 2021 film lightly hinted at Kano’s resurrection. Death is only another portal, said the antagonist, Shang Tsung, played by Chin Han. With Kano’s return confirmed, this sentence adds relevance, suggesting that Shang Tsung, famed for his soul-controlling abilities and resurrection, may play a significant part.
The original film depicted Kano’s journey as one of betrayal and warfare. Initially an ally of Earthrealm, he eventually turned against his companions for financial reasons. This treason resulted in his defeat at the hands of Sonya, played by Jessica McNamee. The 2021 film was a commercial success, collecting $84 million globally on a $55 million budget, making it HBO Max’s most successful film launch.
The sequel hopes to expand on the franchise’s rich narrative while still providing the intense action moments that fans demand. Kano’s unexplained return adds an intriguing element to the film, with Lawson suggesting that audiences would be kept guessing about his character’s true affiliations throughout the plot.
