Max has greenlit a second season of its medical drama The Pitt, following strong audience reception and critical acclaim for the first season. The series, which debuted in January, follows Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch—portrayed by Noah Wyle—as he leads the emergency room at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital during a grueling 15-hour shift.
The show features an ensemble cast that includes Tracey Ifeachor, Patrick Ball, Katherine LaNasa, Supriya Ganesh, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden, Isa Briones, Gerran Howell, and Shabana Azeez.
Each episode captures one hour of Dr. Robby’s shift, presenting both the clinical and personal challenges faced by hospital staff. Critics have responded positively, with the drama holding a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and its premiere ranking among the top five for Max original series.
Created by R. Scott Gemmill, The Pitt is produced by John Wells Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Wells, Gemmill, and Wyle serve as executive producers, reuniting after their previous collaboration on ER.
Sarah Aubrey, head of Max Original Programming, praised the show for its fresh take on procedural storytelling and the authentic portrayal of medical professionals working in a 2025 emergency room.
Channing Dungey, Chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD US Networks, also lauded the production team and cast for their work in capturing the intensity of a high-pressure hospital environment.
While Season 1 concluded its run in April to a positive reception, details regarding the format for Season 2 remain under discussion. In addition to the renewal news, Max confirmed that new episodes will continue to air on Thursdays at 9:00 p.m. ET.
The production team appears eager to build on the foundation laid by the first season, even as the series faces a legal challenge from the Michael Crichton estate. The estate alleges that The Pitt revisits concepts from ER, a show originally developed by Crichton and later revived by some of the same creative forces.
