Ram Kapoor’s “Mistry” Brings Monk to Mumbai

Kapoor leads Disney+ Hotstar’s June thriller “Mistry,” Banijay Asia’s Indian spin on the beloved OCD-afflicted detective.

Disney+ Hotstar has set 27 June for the premiere of “Mistry,” the Indian re-imagining of NBCUniversal’s Emmy-winning drama Monk.
The eight-episode series is produced by Banijay Asia in collaboration with Universal International Studios, giving the detective franchise its first South-Asian makeover.

Veteran actor Ram Kapoor steps into Tony Shalhoub’s shoes as Armaan Mistry, an obsessive-compulsive sleuth who now consults for the Mumbai Police.
“Armaan Mistry is a character unlike any I’ve played before… I have deep-dived into his quirks, brilliance and vulnerabilities,” Kapoor told Deadline’s Indian partners.
The cast includes Mona Singh as ACP Sehmat Siddiqui, with Shikha Talsania and Kshitish Date; filmmaker Rishab Seth directs the adaptation.

Banijay Asia chief Deepak Dhar calls the show “a seamless blend of crime, humour and heart,” adding that localising an iconic neuro-divergent hero “hits all the right chords” with Indian audiences.
Linfield Ng, VP at NBCUniversal Formats, said Kapoor “brings real charisma and depth” to a role that has “found a perfect home in India”.
The launch follows a wider Banijay–NBCU pact to remake U.S. titles for India, a pipeline that already includes The Good Wife and The Night Manager.

The original Monk ran for eight seasons on USA Network between 2002 and 2009, collecting eight Emmys and inspiring a 2023 reunion film.
While hailed for its wit, critics such as The Guardian have noted the show’s sometimes uneven portrayal of obsessive-compulsive disorder and other mental-health issues.

Disney+ Hotstar executive Sumanta Bose says the remake will feel “rooted and Indian, yet uniquely fresh” for the streamer’s 100-million-plus user base.
Banijay’s earlier hits on the platform have boosted subscriptions, and analysts view Mistry as another swing at premium local IP in an increasingly crowded Hindi-language OTT war.
