James Gunn Shrugs Off $700 Million Target for ‘Superman’ Reboot

Director insists the July reboot doesn’t need a record haul to justify DC’s decade-long relaunch.

James Gunn, co-chief of DC Studios and the writer-director of next year’s Superman, dismissed a circulating claim that the film must gross $700 million worldwide to be considered profitable, calling the figure “complete and utter nonsense.” He reiterated the stance in a brief reply on Threads, adding that the break-even math “isn’t as big a situation as people are saying.”

The rumor gained traction across fan sites and some entertainment coverage earlier this month. It grew from June projections suggesting a $700 million yard-stick based on a reported $225 million production cost and hefty global marketing spend. Industry shorthand that a tent-pole must double its combined costs to land in the black put the informal threshold nearer the mid-$600 million range, analysts noted.

Gunn argued that the studio’s strategy is broader, noting that recent DC entries Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash failed to ignite the box office yet the decade-long relaunch plan remains intact. He has repeatedly said storytelling, not raw scale, is the best antidote to superhero fatigue.

Superman features David Corenswet in his debut as Clark Kent, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Corenswet has publicly said he would gladly remain in the cape “whether once or ten times,” underscoring the team’s confidence in the project. Gunn recently confirmed a two-hour-nine-minute runtime and denied any studio push to shorten the film.

Scheduled to open in U.S. theaters on July 11 2025, the film is the inaugural chapter of the new DC Universe slate overseen by Gunn and producing partner Peter Safran.
