Set in 1998 in the small town of Kassidy, Kathy Rain 2: Soothsayer picks up three years after the original’s events, with its titular gumshoe struggling to keep her fledgling detective agency afloat. A series of ritualistic murders—each crime scene marked by shards of obsidian scrying mirrors—has attracted national attention and a hefty reward for anyone bold enough to unmask the killer known as the Soothsayer. From the sunlit aisles of the local library to the shadowy ruins where the next victim falls, the game shifts seamlessly from cozy investigation to unsettling horror. Its pixel-art environments and classic point-and-click interface evoke the golden age of adventure design, yet its pacing and writing lean into modern sensibilities.

Although the story stands on its own, returning players will catch subtle nods to previous events and character relationships. The blend of methodical clue-gathering and gradually intensifying supernatural overtones sets the stage for a mystery that balances grounded detective work with darker themes, promising a layered experience for both genre veterans and newcomers alike.

Travel between locations via a motorcycle menu, which streamlines back-and-forth trips without breaking immersion. Kathy’s walking speed can feel deliberate in larger scenes, but the compact design of each area keeps navigation brisk.

Central to your investigation is Kathy’s notebook, which logs objectives, telephone numbers, interview topics, and newly discovered clues. Once you question an NPC about a topic, the notebook grays out that subject, removing needless repetition. This subtle design choice keeps the focus on forward momentum rather than rote checklist completion.

Puzzle variety ranges from straightforward inventory challenges—combining items or using them in environmental contexts—to more cerebral tasks. For instance, a library computer quiz demands typed answers parsed from in-game research, while a poem-composition sequence hinges on correctly interpreting cryptic character preferences. Occasional timed sequences introduce stakes without harsh penalties: failure simply restarts you at the beginning of that segment.

Overall, puzzles feel logical and fair: every solution follows from clues you’ve already encountered, and Kathy’s quips often nudge you back on track if you stray too far.
