SXSW’s new London offshoot opened on June 2 with Stans, a 97-minute documentary on Eminem’s superfans directed by Steven Leckart and produced by the rapper’s Shady Films. The sold-out gala at the Barbican Centre set the tone for a weeklong festival aimed at fusing music, film and technology across East London, while Paramount+ confirmed it will stream the film in North America and the U.K. later this year.
London’s Barbican Centre became a sea of blond “Stan” look-alikes Monday night as the Eminem-produced documentary Stans opened the inaugural SXSW London Screen Festival. The 97-minute film, directed by Emmy nominee Steven Leckart, headlined the festival’s world-premiere gala. Festival organisers announced the selection in April, underlining ambitions for the Austin-born brand’s first European edition in Shoreditch and Hoxton.
Stans tracks the evolution of fervent fandom since Eminem’s 2000 single “Stan” cemented the term in popular slang, weaving new interviews with archival material and fan-submitted videos. In pre-festival notes Leckart said the film “asks why devotion sometimes tips into obsession,” a point he revisited during a post-screening Q&A.
Shady Films produced alongside DIGA Studios and Hill District Media, with Eminem and manager Paul Rosenberg credited as executive producers. Pitchfork previously reported that the team crowdsourced stories from fans who tattoo lyrics or archive memorabilia, promising a “disarmingly personal” lens on celebrity culture.
Paramount+ holds international streaming rights and plans to debut the film later this year, while MTV Entertainment Studios oversees additional distribution. Monday’s premiere drew filmmakers Darren Aronofsky and Amma Asante alongside hundreds of ticket-holders sporting Eminem’s signature buzz cut, according to festival press images.
Outside the venue, SXSW London head of screen Anna Bogutskaya said the documentary “sets the tone for a programme that celebrates risk-taking stories across disciplines.” Organisers expect more than 20,000 attendees across film, tech and music events during the six-day London experiment.
Industry analysts such as Rolling Stone’s Future of Music forum note that musician-led documentaries are a thriving draw for streamers, citing recent successes from Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift. Early reaction was upbeat: a Reddit megathread logged over 1,500 comments within three hours of the Q&A, many praising the honesty of the fan interviews.
