Jason Sudeikis wants to make more “Ted Lasso,” but the show’s co-creator and star says nothing has been decided on a fifth or sixth season, and no one has started writing. Speaking on the podcast “Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso,” Sudeikis said he “would like to” continue the Apple TV comedy, then added that “it takes a village.” Asked whether Apple would welcome more episodes, he said he would assume so. Pressed on whether new seasons will actually happen, he gave a plain answer: “I just don’t know.” He said he was not being coy on purpose. “We haven’t started a writers’ room or anything like that,” he said.
The timeline matters. A writers’ room has not opened, so a return to production is likely a long way off, and Apple has announced no renewal. Sudeikis said he would expect the streamer to proceed if the show’s main players wanted to come back.
He also admitted the creative tank may need refilling. Fragoso noted that Sudeikis had no concept for a fourth season before making it and was running on empty. “We’re going to need a bigger cup,” Sudeikis joked. He did not close the door. After a long break following Season 3, he said, he kept hearing the characters in his head, and then “other new voices started to show up.” Those belonged to the women on the soccer team who featured in that season. “I think it’d be fun,” he said.
Sudeikis has resisted extending the series before. He believed it would end after Season 3, in part because Ted returned home to be with his son, an ending he considered right. Season 4 arrived after a three-year gap. Its finale left room for more story, though it can also stand as a conclusion.
Co-creator and co-showrunner Brendan Hunt, who plays Coach Beard, has offered a similar read. He said Sudeikis “plays the cards close to his chest,” and that he is not privy to the discussions among the powers that be. Some commentators have suggested a fifth season could center on the women’s team, with Ted as a mentor to a younger coach. That idea comes from speculation, not from anything Sudeikis or Apple has said. Apple has not commented on the future of the series.
