Prime Video is developing a spin-off of its popular “Bosch” series. The new show will focus on Detective Renee Ballard from the “Harry Bosch” novels by Michael Connelly. Maggie Q will play the lead role of Ballard, who takes charge of the LA Police Department’s new cold case unit.

Ballard must tackle unsolved cases with limited funding and an overflowing workload. The cold case team works as volunteers to investigate old murders. Ballard is determined to solve these crimes and find justice. She will face challenges but uses empathy and strong sleuthing to examine each cold case closely.

Fans will also see Titus Welliver return as Harry Bosch. Even though Bosch has retired from the police, he assists Ballard as a trusted ally. Bosch shares his experience and helps navigate potential dangers.

Several experienced actors join the cast in supporting roles. John Carroll Lynch will portray Thomas Laffont, Ballard’s former partner who comes out of retirement to co-lead the unit. Courtney Taylor plays Samira Parker, a former officer who rejoins at Ballard’s request.

Michael Mosley takes on the part of Ted Rawls, a reserve officer assigned to oversee Ballard. Amy Hill appears as Ballard’s grandmother Tutu, who offers emotional support. Rounding out the main roles are Rebecca Field as an intuitive volunteer and Victoria Moroles as a dedicated intern.

The untitled series draws from Connelly’s books “Deser Star” and “The Black Ice” for its suspenseful mystery stories. Viewers can expect the compelling drama of previous “Bosch” shows. While no premiere date is set, fans will see Ballard’s first appearance later this season in “Bosch: Legacy.”

An experienced production team includes executive producers Jet Wilkinson, Michael Connelly, Michael Alaimo, and Kendall Sherwood. Alaimo and Sherwood also act as showrunners. Amazon MGM Studios produces with help from Fabel Entertainment and Hieronymus Pictures.

As Prime Video expands its slate, the “Bosch” spin-off allows it to leverage the popularity of the original series in a new story with Ballard as the lead detective.
