Visiting the UNESCO windmills in Kinderdijk is always a good idea. Kinderdijk’s iconic mill complex consists of 19 mills in the northwestern part of the Alblasserwaard region. Eighteen mills belong to the village of Kinderdijk; one mill, the ‘Blokker’, lies just outside the municipality of Alblasserdam.
The windmills of Kinderdijk were built to pump up water from the low-lying polders and are thus a typical example of Dutch water management. The windmills are the cradle of Dutch water management and have been on the Unesco World Heritage List since 1997.
