New Black Ops 4 Details Out: The Game Was To Offer a Career Mode

This idea was abandoned.

Black Ops 4

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 of 2018 famously lacked a campaign, amongst other things. Documents published now show that the production was originally supposed to offer a story-driven “career,” with 2-on-2 gameplay.

Source of the revelation is a huge package of design documents about the game, posted on Reddit by fans of the series. The 2019 mode was unofficially mentioned by journalist Jason Schreier, who wrote about problems inside the Treyarch studio. Now we’ve received details.

Duo players (you could also play alone, with a partner led by the AI) would compete against another pair over the network.

The team which was the first to reach the goal of the mission won. The entire game was to be offered as a constantly updated service, tied to the mutliplayer and the mode’s specialists.

As for the plot, the story of Career took place in 2070, following the events of Black Ops 3. What’s very interesting is that the world presented was ruined by a global pandemic and climate catastrophes.

Sounds familiar? The players represented one of two factions, and missions were supposed to be short and varied.

Ultimately – as is well known – we didn’t get anything similar in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Career was reportedly abandoned at the beginning of 2018, because of technical problems and as a result of testing, in which gameplay was described as repetitive and uninteresting. It also didn’t help that the October release was fast approaching.
