There was great news today for those waiting for the Dead Space remake, because Electronic Arts has confirmed that the game is ready for its debut, so it’s only a simple matter of time before gamers are back in the Ishimura.

Series fans certainly know what they will find, but the remake has a renewed terror that promises to surprise them as if it were the first time.

Electronic Arts is well aware that they are in with a great opportunity with the Dead Space remake, and they made it clear from the start that they intended to get it right.

Among the points that were also very clear is that Electronic Arts knew what they required to make a good execution and among these points was the terror and the stress of exploring the Ishimura spacecraft.

Dead Space To Have Dynamic Terror Through a New System

The developer Motive developed more dynamic graphics, audio and lighting, which will give players more control over the characters’ emotions, including the Intensity Director.

We are talking about a new system with “dynamic events”, which customizes the experience to maintain the stress. Details show that this system includes elements like visual or audio changes, such as steam or haze, and the emergence of enemies, which, when in combination, will make the experience hand-crafted.

“It’s a system of content organization, appearance and pacing control, and depending on how we count things, the system has over 1200 unique events with a massive variety of possible combinations.” says senior systems designer Dan Kim.

So How Will the Dead Space Remake’s Intensity Director Work?

The developers provided an example in which the player can see 2 paths, one dark and one with more illumination. The seemingly safer clear path, however, could hold more danger, such as an enemy coming out of an air vent and mist, let alone a sudden power outage.

“Let’s say you hear a Necromorph in a duct, then you hear it break, and then the Necromorph appears. If I hear it again, but this one doesn’t appear, I’ll go to the conduit and wait for something to happen. If I don’t hear the duct break and it appears, I’ll suddenly jump in fear because I wasn’t expecting that,” commented the game’s audio director, Olivier Asselin.

This new stress system in the Dead Space remake may prove to be a bit overwhelming, though the developers thought about this and made it not to be harsh on the player, but to provide a breather from time to time so the player doesn’t get tired of it, while adding a bit of randomness and the surprise of not knowing what to expect.

“You know, what I find somewhat equally powerful is when you head into a steamy corridor and it’s almost silent except for the flickering light halfway across the room… and you’re sure you’re going to be scared, but nothing happens! You know you’ve got a scary set when that rhythm is accurate,” stated lead lighting artist Michael Yeomans.

The Dead Space remake is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox X|S Series and PC and will be debuting on January 27, 2023. So what do you think of Dead Space’s Intensity Director? Let us know in the comments.
