Microsoft Has Reportedly Sold Fewer Than 9 Million Xbox Consoles in 2021

Nintendo has devastated the competition.

With the battle between Sony and Microsoft still ongoing over the Activision Blizzard acquisition, we have learned roughly how many consoles from each manufacturer found new buyers in 2021.

It’s all thanks to a 37-page document prepared for the FTC office by Microsoft. The Redmond-based giant included in it key information on console sales by the three major console manufacturers – Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.

As Nintendo and Sony publish official sales results, what we can estimate is how many Xboxes have been distributed in 2021.

Based on data published by the two aforementioned companies, the Nintendo hardware went to 23.67 million gamers, and Sony delivered some 14.7 million PlayStation devices to store shelves in 2021.

By contrast, the chart provided by Microsoft (for the FTC) suggested that Nintendo alone took 50% of the market in 2021, which makes it clear that some 47.34 million consoles were sold between January and December 2021.

By subtracting the numbers behind Nintendo and PlayStation from the 47.34 million, the result is that Microsoft shipped just under 9 million (8.97 million to be exact) Xbox consoles in 2021, placing it on the bottom step of the podium.
