Despite being released well over 18 months ago, the Netflix series Maid has found its way back into the streaming platform’s top-rated shows, courtesy of the social media phenomenon TikTok. Clips from this highly-rated series, featuring Margaret Qualley in the lead role, have taken a tour around the popular social media app, racking up millions of views.

Netflix recently tweeted about the unexpected revival of the show, stating, “Nearly 2 years after its initial release, Maid is back in Netflix’s Top 10.” They went on to add that “After exploding on TikTok, the Emmy-nominated limited series starring Margaret Qualley, Anika Noni Rose, Andie MacDowell, and Nick Robinson climbed to #8 on this week’s English TV list.”

TikTok’s Impact on ‘Maid’

While the trigger for this resurgence remains unclear, snippets from the critically acclaimed series have made frequent appearances on TikTok’s ‘For You’ page. Some clips, spotlighting Qualley’s character Alex’s struggle as a single mother escaping a toxic relationship, have garnered over half a million likes.

Popular scenes feature Alex working in houses and imparting maternal advice to the homeowners. These include exchanges with Anika Noni Rose’s character Regina and MacDowell, who portrays Alex’s mother, both in the series and in real life.

Behind the Scenes: The Author’s Perspective

TikTok also offers behind-the-scenes insights from Stephanie Land, the author of the book on which Maid is based. Since the series leans heavily on her personal experiences, Land has been sharing personal videos, revealing parallels between the storyline and her life.

Upon its release in October 2021, Maid captured the hearts of viewers, becoming a career-defining role for Qualley. It clinched the title of Netflix’s fourth most-watched series of the year, and scored nominations at prestigious awards including the Emmys, Golden Globes, and Critics’ Choice Awards.

In a nutshell, there’s no better time to explore one of the most compelling original shows on Netflix. With its emotional depth, inspiring narrative, and relatable themes, Maid rightfully deserves the renewed attention it’s currently enjoying.
