HBO and HBO Max Chairman and CEO, Casey Bloys, recently discussed the growing concerns surrounding the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) writers strike and the looming Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike.
In an interview with Variety, Bloys emphasized the significant roles writers and actors play in the entertainment industry and expressed his hopes for a resolution that recognizes their value and encourages their return to work.
Anticipating Challenges for Everyone
Bloys candidly acknowledged the potential consequences if the strikes continue, stating, “It will slow everything down. It will be a lot of pain for everybody, for all sides.” Contemplating the difficult task of navigating these strikes as an industry, he added, “It’s not a lot of fun to contemplate having to deal with, having to figure this out.” Bloys also predicted that the impact of the strikes would become noticeable to viewers in 2024.
Negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers are set to conclude on July 12. If a satisfactory agreement cannot be reached, SAG-AFTRA members, who overwhelmingly voted in favor of a strike, are prepared to commence their strike on July 13. This impending strike, coupled with the ongoing WGA writers strike, casts a shadow of uncertainty over the future of the entertainment industry.
As the strikes loom, the industry faces an increasingly gloomy outlook for the upcoming fall TV season. There has been a worrisome trend of content cancellations and removals, with 2023 already witnessing nearly as many TV show cancellations as the entirety of 2022, as reported by GameSpot. These developments only contribute to the prevailing uncertainty surrounding the industry’s future.

Emmys Scheduling and Potential Resolution
During the interview, Bloys also addressed the scheduling of the Emmys, expressing a preference for a November timeframe. This preference suggests a potential resolution to the strikes by that time.
The recent Emmy nominations, which included a total of 127 nominations for HBO and HBO Max, reflect the industry’s acknowledgment of their contributions and achievements.
