The game of Baldur’s Gate 3 is a thrilling realm of combat, strategy, and decision-making. Each battle is a test of cunning, pitting your wits and skills against the game’s diverse array of formidable foes. A key aspect of this is determining who gets the first strike.

More often than not, landing the initial blow can significantly sway the outcome of an encounter. Your squad can unleash a barrage of devastating blows, potentially incapacitating enemies who have not had the opportunity to strategically position themselves or amplify their abilities.

A perfect example of this can be seen in the game’s rogue class. These stealthy warriors have the ability to execute potent sneak attacks, either in close combat or at a distance, against adversaries who have yet to take their turn. This strategy is even more effective if your characters are the ones dictating the pace of battle by going first.

Although the initial impression may suggest that the attack sequence in Baldur’s Gate 3 is primarily determined by an arbitrary dice roll, this isn’t quite the case. In reality, each character’s Initiative stat holds sway over the order of turns. So, let’s delve deeper into how this works and how you can boost your team’s Initiative to secure that pivotal first strike in combat.

Understanding and Boosting Initiative

The concept of Initiative in Baldur’s Gate 3 largely hinges on a character’s Dexterity stat. As a fight commences, you’ll notice the word “Initiative” followed by a numerical value appearing over each character. This number is the sum of a d20 (a twenty-sided dice) roll and each character’s Dexterity modifier.

In most cases, the character with the loftiest Dexterity stat takes the lead in combat. However, there can be instances where a character with a lesser Dexterity score secures a higher dice roll, enabling them to leapfrog their competitors and strike first.

Therefore, if your goal is to consistently secure the top Initiative spot, focusing on improving your characters’ Dexterity stats could be your safest bet. While this approach doesn’t guarantee absolute success, it can significantly enhance your chances of securing the initial turn in a combat encounter.

There are various methods to bolster your character’s Dexterity. Firstly, you can allocate more points to Dexterity during the character creation phase or while respecing your character. Certain Feats, which can be chosen upon leveling up, allow you to add points to a specific stat, including Dexterity.

The Feat known as ‘Ability Improvement’ is particularly effective for this purpose. Lastly, numerous gear items available in the game can either provide a direct increase to your Dexterity points or amplify your Dexterity modifier, giving you an added edge in battles.

The Element of Surprise

Another crucial piece of information you should grasp pertains to the ‘Surprise’ effect in Baldur’s Gate 3. This effect occurs when you stealthily approach an enemy, either with a solitary character or your entire party, and launch an attack. This ambush tactic confers the ‘Surprised’ status on the enemy, causing them to miss a turn and providing you with a free opportunity to inflict damage.

This strategic move effectively bypasses the Initiative dice roll, assuring that your squad gets the first strike, regardless of individual character Initiatives. Mastering the art of the surprise attack can provide an invaluable tool in your combat strategy arsenal, allowing you to dictate the rhythm of the battle and maximize your chances of victory.
