When you set foot on one of Starfield’s diverse planets, you’ll find vast landscapes stretching in every direction. However, you won’t be hopping into a ground vehicle like a dune buggy or landspeeder to traverse these terrains. Instead, you’ll rely on your trusty jetpack to get around.
Bethesda’s Todd Howard has explained that this absence of ground vehicles is intentional and contributes to crafting a more tailored gaming experience. According to Howard, “It’s something we consider… Once you do vehicles, it does change the gameplay.
By focusing on the fact that once you land on your ship, you’re on foot, it allows us to control the player’s experience and the pace at which they discover things.”
Your Spaceship and Jetpack as Alternatives
While Starfield doesn’t offer ground vehicles, players won’t be left without means of transportation. Your spaceship will serve as a vehicle for traveling through space, and you’ll also have access to a jetpack that can be upgraded, adding an element of fun to exploring the game’s planets.
Some players have expressed hope that Bethesda might introduce the option to construct land-based vehicles for Starfield through future DLC or expansions. While this remains uncertain for now, it’s a possibility that fans can hold onto.

In the same interview, Bethesda faced inquiries about Starfield’s optimization for PC. Despite a stern question from Bloomberg, Todd Howard defended the game’s PC optimization, stating, “Uh, we did. It’s running great, it’s a next-gen PC game. We really do push the technology, so you may need to upgrade your PC.”
