The 2024 Sundance Film Festival, a focal point for innovative and groundbreaking independent cinema, concluded its 40th edition by announcing the winners of various prestigious awards.

The festival, held from January 18–28 in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah, brought together a diverse array of films, with live and online screenings. This year’s event, a blend of in-person and virtual experiences, celebrated Sundance’s rich history and its role as a launchpad for influential stories and artists.

Grand Jury Prizes: The Pinnacle of Sundance Accolades

The U.S. Grand Jury Prize for Dramatic film was awarded to Alessandra Lacorazza’s “In The Summers,” a poignant tale of two sisters navigating their relationship with their volatile father during summer visits in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Lacorazza’s direction also earned her a Special Jury Award.

The U.S. Grand Jury Prize for Documentary went to “Porcelain War” by Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev, a harrowing portrayal of Ukrainian artists’ resilience amidst war.

In the World Cinema categories, the Dramatic prize was bestowed upon “Sujo,” directed by Astrid Rondero and Fernanda Valadez, exploring the impact of violence on a young boy in Mexico. The Documentary prize was awarded to Silje Evensmo Jacobsen’s “A New Kind of Wilderness,” chronicling a Norwegian family’s struggle to adapt to modern society.

Audience Favorites and Special Jury Awards

The Festival Favorite Award, chosen by audience votes, was presented to Angela Patton and Natalie Rae’s documentary “Daughters,” following young girls preparing for a dance with their incarcerated fathers.

The Audience Awards recognized films like Sean Wang’s “Dìdi,” a coming-of-age story set in 2008, and “Girls Will Be Girls” by Shuchi Talati in the World Cinema Dramatic category. Benjamin Ree’s documentary “Ibelin” and Rich Peppiatt’s “Kneecap” also won audience admiration.

The World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Awards for Craft and Cinematic Innovation were given to “Nocturnes” and “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat,” respectively, while the World Cinema Dramatic jury recognized “Handling the Undead” for Original Music and “Girls Will Be Girls” for Acting.

Script and Direction Honored

Jesse Eisenberg received the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award for “A Real Pain,” a film he also directed and starred in. The Directing Awards honored filmmakers across various categories, spotlighting directors like Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie for “Sugarcane” in the U.S. Documentary category and Raha Amirfazli and Alireza Ghasemi for “In the Land of Brothers” in the World Cinema Dramatic category.

Reflecting on 40 years of storytelling excellence, the Sundance Institute remains a champion for independent voices in film and media. The festival’s success stories include iconic films and filmmakers who have shaped the cultural landscape. The 2024 edition continued this legacy, highlighting stories that entertained, moved, and challenged audiences worldwide.
