The world of manga and anime has been left in mourning with the passing of Akira Toriyama, the visionary creator behind the iconic “Dragon Ball” series and several other notable works.

Toriyama died on March 1st at the age of 68, due to an acute subdural hematoma, a condition where blood collects between the brain and the skull. The announcement of his death was made by his company, Bird Studio, which also revealed that Toriyama was in the midst of creating new works with great enthusiasm at the time of his passing.

Akira Toriyama’s Legacy and Unfinished Dreams

Toriyama, born in Nagoya, Japan in 1955, was a prolific figure in the manga industry, best known for “Dragon Ball,” which debuted in 1984. The series followed the adventures of Son Goku from his childhood through adulthood as he trains in martial arts and explores the world in search of the seven orbs known as Dragon Balls.

The series was a phenomenal success, inspiring countless adaptations, including animated TV series, movies, and an immense array of merchandise, which have captivated fans worldwide.

Despite achieving international fame, Toriyama was a private individual, known for his humble demeanor. In a rare 2013 interview, he expressed surprise at the global success of “Dragon Ball,” remarking that his only aim had been to entertain boys in Japan.

His humility and dedication to his craft have been widely admired, contributing to the outpouring of tributes from fans across the globe. Social media platforms have been flooded with messages of condolence and gratitude for the worlds he created, which have been a significant part of many people’s childhoods.

Toriyama’s impact on the manga and anime industry cannot be overstated. His distinctive visual style and storytelling have influenced a generation of artists and creators. Besides “Dragon Ball,” his works such as “Dr. Slump,” “Cowa!,” “Kajika,” and “Sand Land” have also left an indelible mark on the genre.

A Private Farewell

In accordance with Toriyama’s and his family’s wishes, a private funeral was held, attended only by close relatives and friends. Bird Studio has requested privacy during this time and has expressed gratitude towards fans worldwide for their support over Toriyama’s 45-year career. While there is uncertainty about a public memorial, the legacy of Akira Toriyama’s work is sure to endure, continuing to inspire and entertain for generations to come.

Toriyama’s departure leaves a void in the hearts of many and unfinished projects that hint at the creative energy he still possessed. His studio, Bird Studio, lamented the loss of what could have been, highlighting the depth of passion Toriyama had for his craft. Nevertheless, Toriyama’s contributions to the world of manga and his unique creations will forever remain a testament to his genius, beloved by fans around the world.
