Margot Robbie’s ‘Monopoly’ Movie Poised to Capitalize on ‘Barbie’ Success

In a delightful twist of fate, Margot Robbie’s latest movie announcement perfectly pays off one of the funniest lines from her blockbuster hit, “Barbie.” The actress is officially set to produce a live-action “Monopoly” movie, a move that adds an extra layer of irony to her character’s quip about not controlling “the railways or the flow of commerce” in the beloved 2023 film.

Robbie’s “Monopoly” project, being developed with her production company LuckyChap and Hasbro Entertainment, is poised to capitalize on the immense success of “Barbie,” which grossed over $1.4 billion at the global box office. The studio behind the “Monopoly” movie, Lionsgate, has high hopes that Robbie and her team can replicate the magic they captured with the Mattel doll-turned-cinematic juggernaut.

In “Barbie,” Robbie’s character finds herself shocked to learn that the real world is not the utopia of female empowerment she had imagined. This leads to one of the film’s funniest moments, where Barbie responds to being labeled a “fascist” by insisting, “I don’t control the railways or the flow of commerce.” This line is a direct reference to the core gameplay of “Monopoly,” where players seek to dominate the board by purchasing properties, railroads, and utilities.

Now, with Robbie officially involved in bringing “Monopoly” to the big screen, this scene from “Barbie” takes on an extra layer of comedic irony. The actress’ producer role in the board game adaptation suggests she is well-positioned to explore the themes of capitalism and corporate power that lie at the heart of the classic game.

Much like “Barbie” addressed important issues of feminism and gender norms, the “Monopoly” movie will likely seek to tackle the concerns surrounding monopolistic practices and the unequal distribution of wealth. The film is expected to be set in a fictional world inspired by the game, offering ample opportunity to draw parallels to real-world economic and social dynamics.

In a statement, Lionsgate’s Adam Fogelson praised LuckyChap’s “clear point of view” on the “Monopoly” property, hinting that the adaptation will bring a distinct perspective to the beloved board game. Fans of “Barbie” will no doubt be eager to see how Robbie and her team approach this new cinematic challenge, especially in light of the actress’ memorable line about the “flow of commerce.”

As the “Monopoly” movie continues to take shape, the connection to “Barbie” only heightens the anticipation. Robbie’s involvement promises to infuse the project with the same blend of humor, heart, and social commentary that made her previous venture such a resounding success. Audiences can look forward to seeing how the actress’ self-aware understanding of corporate power dynamics plays out in this upcoming board game adaptation.
