‘Rebel Moon’ Rout Prompts Calls for Netflix to Refocus on Snyder’s ‘Army of the Dead’

With 'Rebel Moon' Struggling, Snyder's Zombie Universe Emerges as Netflix's Potential Savior

As Zack Snyder’s highly anticipated ‘Rebel Moon’ saga falters under a torrent of scathing reviews, calls are mounting for Netflix to shift its attention to the director’s more well-received ‘Army of the Dead’ franchise. The streaming giant’s investment in Snyder’s ambitious space opera appears to be yielding diminishing returns, with ‘Rebel Moon 2‘ earning an abysmal 18% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, hot on the heels of its predecessor’s underwhelming 21% rating.

In stark contrast, Snyder’s foray into the zombie genre with ‘Army of the Dead’ and its prequel spinoff, ‘Army of Thieves,’ have garnered significantly more positive reviews from both critics and audiences. While not universally acclaimed, the ‘Army’ films have managed to carve out a distinct identity within the saturated zombie subgenre, earning respectable scores of 67% and 68% on the review aggregator, respectively.

This divergence in reception highlights the potential pitfalls of positioning ‘Rebel Moon’ as a grand, sweeping sci-fi saga akin to ‘Star Wars’ – a comparison that may have set expectations unrealistically high. Conversely, the self-contained narratives of the ‘Army’ films have allowed them to establish their own unique tone and avoid unfavorable comparisons to established franchises.

As one critic noted, “Unlike ‘Rebel Moon,’ which is constantly being compared with a well-established sci-fi franchise, ‘Army of the Dead’ has established itself as a unique addition to the zombie sub-genre.” This distinction has arguably worked in the latter’s favor, granting it more leeway to explore its own creative vision without the burden of lofty expectations.

While Snyder had initially envisioned ‘Rebel Moon’ as a potential ‘Star Wars’ film, its ambitious attempt to construct a vast, interconnected universe from the ground up may have been its undoing. In contrast, the ‘Army of the Dead’ franchise has taken a more measured approach, leaving room for narrative expansion while maintaining a focus on self-contained storytelling.

With ‘Rebel Moon 2’ now in the rearview mirror, attention turns to the future of Snyder’s cinematic universes. The director has confirmed that a direct sequel to ‘Army of the Dead,’ tentatively titled ‘Planet of the Dead,’ is in the works, though details remain scarce. Given the relative success of the ‘Army’ films and the struggles faced by ‘Rebel Moon,’ a strategic pivot by Netflix to prioritize Snyder’s zombie opus could prove a prudent move.

As the streaming wars intensify and audiences demand ever-higher production values, the allure of a grounded, critically acclaimed franchise like ‘Army of the Dead’ may outweigh the risks inherent in attempting to construct an expansive sci-fi saga from scratch. For Netflix and Snyder, the path forward may lie not among the stars but within the gritty, post-apocalyptic landscape they’ve already begun to cultivate.
