Epic Games, the developer behind the massively popular battle royale game Fortnite, had its sights set on bringing Samus Aran, the iconic bounty hunter from Nintendo’s Metroid series, into the game as a playable skin. However, according to Epic’s former chief creative officer Donald Mustard, the collaboration fell through due to Nintendo’s stringent demands for platform exclusivity.
In a recent interview with Game File, Mustard revealed that Nintendo was interested in having Samus Aran appear in Fortnite but only if the character remained exclusive to the Nintendo Switch platform. “They [Nintendo] got really hung up on their characters showing up on platforms that weren’t their platforms,” Mustard stated. “They would be thrilled to have Nintendo characters in Fortnite, but just only if it’s on their platform.”
Epic Games, on the other hand, prioritizes maintaining a consistent experience across all platforms, allowing players to access the same content and skins regardless of the device or platform they use. With the Master Chief from Halo and Kratos from God of War already available to all Fortnite players, Epic was unwilling to compromise its cross-platform vision by granting Nintendo’s exclusivity demand for Samus Aran.
The breakdown in negotiations highlights the tension between Nintendo’s long-standing platform-centric approach and the increasingly cross-platform nature of modern gaming experiences.
While Nintendo has embraced collaborations and crossovers within its own ecosystem, such as the recent addition of Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the company remains cautious about extending its iconic characters to other platforms.
