As anticipation builds for the highly-anticipated Deadpool 3, officially titled Deadpool & Wolverine, director Shawn Levy has assured fans that the film won’t devolve into a mindless parade of cameos and fan service. Instead, Levy emphasizes that the story will be the driving force behind which characters make an appearance, rather than a predetermined wish list.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Levy stated, “We didn’t start off with a wish list. From the day we started devising this Deadpool and Wolverine story, we let the story dictate the characters, not the other way around.”
This philosophy extends to the inclusion of characters like Pyro, the fire-based mutant played by Aaron Stanford in X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand. Pyro made a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo in the Deadpool 3 Super Bowl trailer, with Levy confirming that “Aaron and his return as Pyro was an outgrowth of that, and that applies to pretty much all the characters you’ll see in the movie.”
Levy’s approach aligns with his previous statement that Deadpool & Wolverine will not require viewers to have extensive knowledge of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In an interview with AP News, he said, “I very much made this film with certainly a healthy respect and gratitude towards the rabid fan base that has peak fluency in the mythology and lore of these characters and this world. But I didn’t want to presume that. This movie is built for entertainment, with no obligation to come prepared with prior research.”
This stance suggests that Deadpool & Wolverine will aim to strike a balance between satisfying long-time fans and welcoming newcomers to the franchise, without relying heavily on gratuitous cameos or unnecessary fan service.
Levy’s comments come amid speculation and anticipation surrounding the film’s character appearances, especially given the recent merging of the X-Men and Marvel universes. While some fans may have hoped for a cameo-filled extravaganza, Levy’s assurance that the story will take precedence over fan service promises a more cohesive and narratively driven experience.
