FX’s critically-acclaimed miniseries ‘Shogun’ is gaining significant momentum for a second season after the show’s lead star, Hiroyuki Sanada, closed a deal to return as the powerful daimyo Lord Yoshii Toranaga. While other details are still being finalized, Sanada’s committed involvement sets the stage for the unexpected hit to continue its adaptation of James Clavell’s sweeping 1975 novel.
The 10-episode first season, which premiered in February, emerged as a breakthrough success for FX. Boasting a near-perfect 99% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, ‘Shogun’ amassed an impressive 9 million viewers across Hulu, Disney+, and Star+ within just six days of its debut. This warm reception came as a surprise for the lavish period drama, initially marketed as a limited series.
“The phenomenal response to ‘Shogun’ has been incredibly gratifying,” stated FX chairman John Landgraf. “With Hiroyuki-san committed to returning alongside the creative team’s vision, all the pieces are falling into place to continue this epic tale.”
Co-created by Rachel Kondo and Top Gun: Maverick writer Justin Marks, ‘Shogun’ is set in feudal Japan amidst a brutal struggle for the Shogunate. The first season followed the intertwining journeys of Lord Toranaga (Sanada), an ambitious daimyo vying for power; John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), an English sailor stranded in unfamiliar lands; and Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai), a woman whose allegiance is continually tested.
While specific storylines remain under wraps, any subsequent seasons would likely expand on the show’s scope, moving beyond Clavell’s original novel. This prospect raised some concerns from Marks during the show’s initial run.
“How do you even equal the roadmap that Clavell laid out?” Marks pondered. “I don’t know if Clavell could have done it either. That’s probably why he moved on to other books too, right?”
However, with its gripping historical fiction, layered characters, and cinematic flair, ‘Shogun’ struck a chord with audiences yearning for immersive, high-quality longform storytelling on the small screen. FX seems bullish on capitalizing on that momentum.
“Our ambition is to raise the bar even higher in season two,” Landgraf affirmed. “With this incredible cast and creative team, we’re confident ‘Shogun’ will continue to captivate viewers with its rich, globespanning narrative.”
As negotiations continue to lock in additional cast members and creative elements, fans of the feudal Japan saga can likely expect Lord Toranaga’s conquest to wage on. Stay tuned for more updates on ‘Shogun”s continuation in the coming months.
