In a realm of magical warfare, the strategic legends of Total War meet the fantastical lore of Warhammer. This epic combination immerses players in a sprawling campaign across a realm where empires clash with demons and monsters. Through three entries thus far, the Total War: Warhammer trilogy has allowed countless commanders to wage battle as iconic factions ranging from the Empire to Nurgle.

Even after release, further depth is added through downloadable content. Known as DLC, these optional extras introduce new armies, heroes, and mechanics to keep gameplay fresh. The latest installment is Thrones of Decay, building upon the classic setting in memorable fashion. It empowers long-standing powers while bringing unforgettable personalities to the field.

Three lords rise to prominence. Malakai Makaisson lends dwarven engineering to Slayer expeditions aboard a formidable airship. Elspeth Von Draken mounts magical defense of the Empire from dragon-back and teleporting gardens. Most fearsome of all, the plague-ridden Tamurkhan binds rival warlords in a crusade of decay. Accompanying each commander are unique troop varieties and strategic twists tailored to their tales.

Whether veterans seeking fresh challenge or newcomers diving into this fantasy saga, Thrones of Decay stokes the epic wars of Warhammer into richer artistic Storytelling. Its lands and legends come alive through characters now granted deeper dimensions on the digital stage. Magic and machinery once more are set to collide on fields where history is forged in steel, sorcery and valor against the tides of chaos.

Three Paths of Pestilence, Power and Precision

The lords of the Thrones of Decay DLC each deliver unique experiences. Elspeth von Draken rides into battle wielding deathly magic and artillery unmatched in the Empire. Malakai Makaisson proves that even the grumpiest of Dwarfs can be convinced to wander, his adventures and flying fortress expanding Slayer capabilities. Yet it is Tamurkhan who gathers the most ominous forces, promising plagues beyond counting to any who pledge fealty to Nurgle.

Elspeth stands as a potent caster with abilities like reversing time itself. She puts her Lore of Death mastery to good use raining magic on foes from her Carmine Dragon mount. But where Elspeth truly shines is the battlefield, commanding gunlines that would make even Balthasar Gelt take notice. Her Gunnery School upgrades weapons to devastating effect while Morr’s Gardens allow rapid response to threats across the Empire. Accompanying her are new units like the sturdy Knights of the Black Rose and the absurd yet awesome Marienburg Landship.

While most Dwarfs remain content in mountain halls, the call of honor pulls Malakai ever forward. His uniquely mobile fleet serves both as roving base and flying artillery in battles. Malakai’s Adventures take him far in search of glory against legendary beasts, each conquered monster strengthening his array of slayers and war machines. Tagging along are heroes Gotrek and Felix, fighting forces bolstered too by the mighty Thunderbarge summon. Whether facing trolls or titans, Malakai will ensure his experiments meet their full potential on the field.

Most terrifying of all is Tamurkhan’s gruesome gathering. The Chaos swarm listens to his mooted commands, gaining potent allies in return for devotion to Nurgle. Each pledged chieftain lends unique troops to the tide of plague and poison. Tamurkhan himself wades into combat astride his toxic Toad Dragon, his essence able to leap swiftly to fresh host should this frame fall. Alongside him come new mortals of disease like the pestilential Rot Knights and the wretched constructs of the god, all lent in service of the Grandfather’s grand designs of decay.

Total War: Commanders

The factions of Thrones of Decay each put a new spin on battle. Elspeth von Draken excels with ranged firepower but lacks heavy infantry to hold the frontline. Deploying gunners atop hills lets them rain death before the enemy arrives, then knights charge to counterattack. Managing lines of sight is key – nothing ruins a plan like obstructed firing lanes!

Tamurkhan swarms foes with plague bodies. His chieftains bring options, from dwarf artillery to fast-moving fimir. With numbers on their side, Nurgle forces want to drown opponents in rot. It’s important to protect artillery, using warriors as “meat shields” until the big guns turn the tide.

Malakai Makaisson combines firepower and armor. Thunderers lay down covering fire, thunderbarges bomb from above, and slayers wade into melee without fear. His mobility pays off – lure enemies into ambushes before demolishing them with coordinated explosions.

Even experienced players find new strategies with each commander. The AI proves challenging too, adapting to tactics. Multiplayer truly shows their strengths, as human cunning replaces scripted behavior. Coordinating diverse armies through teamwork and feints becomes an art. Whether commanding legions or just a few brave souls, Total War remains a challenge worthy of the world’s greatest commanders.

Legends Take to the Field

Malakai’s adventures see him roaming the lands in search of glory and invention, with his sturdy airship Spirit of Grungni as mobile base. From its decks he can reinforce dwindling armies and brace for the elemental wrath of the North. Malakai’s quests unlock upgrades for his warmachines, rewarding careful planning. Though the foes he seeks are legendary, their battles fall short of expectation.

Elspeth assumes the guise of protector for a fragmented Empire, appearing where needed through her shadowy gardens. Her distant eyes have seen strategy unfold from above as she unleashes artillery from Carmine’s back. Mastery of the deathly arts serves both vigil and vengeance. In her school, gunpowder becomes an grim art, black holes swallowing regiments whole.

Tamurkhan spreads plague with the loyal hordes he wins to his cause. Chaos chieftains lend unique arms to the crusade when fealty is earned, their varied forces swelling the tide of corruption. Tasks are set to learn leadership and expand influence on the frontier of decay. Victory sees realms assimilated as the maggot lord consumes ever more flesh for hosts.

These lords embroil realms in no lesser conflicts. Their mechanics invite tailored tactics and mold each landscape anew with ascending forces. Strategists find fortune in diverse terrain and tools wielded in the Nameless God’s favor. On rotting plains or dwarf-delved mountains, the great game’s finest players will rise.

Cinematic Chaos

Tamurkhan’s crusade brings the horrors of the Plaguefather to life. From the scenic vistas captured in Elspeth’s whirlwind travels between Morr’s Gardens to the churning guts of Nurgle’s realm, each faction leverages the game’s technical prowess to envision their distinct visions. Mesmerizing spells and lush environments immerse viewers in the richness of each army’s character.

Total War: Warhammer 3 Thrones of Decay DLC Review

Elspeth summons ghostly mists and mystical pyrotechnics worthy of any master wizard. Her artillery assaults crackle with sinister energy, empowering the Empire’s gunlines. Malakai’s contraptions burst with explosives and whirring gears, pushing Dwarven engineering to its limits. Even mundane troops appear multi-dimensional through nuanced animations and grimacing portraits.

Sound design further envelops the senses. Hulking beasts bellow in pain as volleys find their marks. Battlecries and clashing steel swell into a vicious crescendo, pulling you into the frenzy. Environmental effects like churning swamps or howling winds propagate a palpable sense of place. Music builds the drama of each hero’s saga through rousing or ominous instrumentation.

Technical performance allows for spectacle on a vast scale. Vast armies materialize without noticeable hitches across different machines. Even the most intense clashes proceed smoothly. Since launch, optimizations have righted original issues to bring stability. Mods continue enriching content without compromising stability.

Through visual and aural mastery, Thrones of Decay brings WARHAMMER’s tabletop tales to thrilling life on screen. Creative Assembly has upheld their virtuosity for transporting fans to the darkest corners of the Old World.

A Return to Form

The new lords introduced in Thrones of Decay breathe fresh life into three iconic Warhammer factions. Elspeth von Draken commands gun lines of the Empire with surgical precision from atop her fiery dragon. As a shadowy protector, she zips between cities to reinforce beleaguered allies.

Total War: Warhammer 3 Thrones of Decay DLC Review

Meanwhile dwarf slayer Malakai Makaisson combines curiosity and combat prowess, embarking on adventures to perfect his wild inventions before battle. His mobile base provides recruits no matter the terrain.

Tamurkhan spreads Nurgle’s gifts with a unique campaign. Currying favor of chieftains expands your forces far beyond the normal plaugebearers. Allies lend support whether you empower a dark elf mage or dwarf artillery. Updates also shower all players with treats. A new Empire wizard and Nurgle lord broaden options without DLC. Small tweaks enhance enduring fun – grudges now span eras rather than constantly rush revenge.

It’s clear the devs listen closely. After a bumpy patch, they’ve steadied the course. Not only do new lords excite, but free additions please everyone. Quality continues long after the purchase. With passion on full display, Thrones of Decay reignites my hype for future journeys in this fantastical world. The best is yet to come.

Gathering Forces

Thrones of Decay brings new armies to three iconic Warhammer factions. Elspeth Von Draken commands gunlines of the Empire with unmatched prowess, while developing deadly technology through her Imperial Gunnery School. She moves swiftly between her Morr Gardens, striking from the shadows.

Total War: Warhammer 3 Thrones of Decay DLC Review

Dwarf Slayer Malakai Makaisson also seeks glory in battle, but does so by developing war machines through his adventures against legendary foes. His mobile fortress, the Spirit of Grungni, grants flexibility. Meanwhile Tamurkhan gathers plagues and potent champions to his banner, lending Nurgle diversity in both tactics and recruiting options.

Yet not all fare equally. While Malakai and Elspeth feel finely tuned, the Dwarfs still yearn for variety. And Tamurkhan’s hordes, for all their terror, lack range and mobility. Creative Assembly made strong returns with committed patching and refunding, yet must venture further to fully satisfy. The same holds for gameplay – individual DLC pieces offer reward, but some missions could use more panache.

Overall Thrones of Decay enhances existing lore with care and talent. Its pricing benefits thoseselective in factions. And its foundations, alongside consistent support, suggest brighter days ahead for both the DLC and series at large. With continued growth and learning from missteps, Creative Assembly may yet rally all manner of enthusiasts to continue exploring this doomsday dazzler of a setting for ages more.
