While The Center map expansion has been largely celebrated for its impressive scale and dynamic environments, developer Snail Games has sparked backlash by offering the fierce fire-breathing Pyromane creature as a $4.99 microtransaction.
Revealed during the run-up to The Center’s launch across all platforms this week, the Pyromane emerged as the first premium “Fantastic Tame” available for purchase. A fierce lion-like beast able to alternate between full size and tiny shoulder-mounted forms, the formidable creature boasts unique offensive pyrokinetic abilities and enhanced mobility. However, many fans feel nickel-and-diming for an overpowered single character undermines the spirit of the acclaimed survival sandbox.
“A paid single animal at $5 is most likely the first of many to come,” lamented one particularly disgruntled player on Steam. “This feels like a major cash grab situation is headed our way.” Others have sarcastically derided the Pyromane as “pay-to-win,” criticizing its considerable advantages over the game’s base dinosaurs.
Such dissent isn’t entirely surprising given Ark: Survival Ascended’s contentious history. While controversy continues swirling, the developers appear set to trudge ahead – though perhaps evaluating the pricing strategy for future potential Fantastic Tames.
