The Final Shape, marketed as the epic conclusion to the current narrative saga, encountered widespread technical issues during its launch on Wednesday, leaving countless Guardians stuck at the login screen or abruptly removed from activities mid-mission.
The problems began almost immediately after the pivotal expansion went live, with Destiny 2’s servers overwhelmed by the influx of players eager to experience the new content. According to Bungie, “failures” in the game’s load balancing systems caused many to be unable to gain access at all. While partial mitigation was achieved within two hours, other errors persisted throughout the day, frequently kicking participating users from vital story missions and cutscenes.

The disruptive launch woes sparked an onslaught of negative user reviews for The Final Shape on Steam, with the expansion’s rating briefly plummeting to 36% as irate players vented their frustrations. However, sentiments have already begun shifting more positively as server stability improves and more get the chance to delve into the new content.
“Despite the horrible server issues on launch, this is legitimately a fantastic campaign and leagues better than [the previous DLC] Lightfall,” praised one recent review. “The launch was really bad, [but] that shouldn’t be an issue that looms over the DLC for its lifespan.”
While frustrating, high demand crashing servers is a persistent challenge studios face with major online game releases and updates. Still, some critics argue Bungie, with its wealth of experience, should have been better prepared – especially for the finale resolving eight years’ worth of an evolving narrative.
