HoYoverse’s highly anticipated urban fantasy ARPG, Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ), is set to make a splash in the gaming world with its imminent release and a surprising musical collaboration. As the July 4th, 2024 launch date approaches, producer Zhenyu Li has shed light on the game’s unique features and future plans, while the company has announced a partnership with Grammy-winning DJ Tiësto.
In a recent roundtable interview, Li addressed concerns about market saturation in the gacha hero collector genre. “What I focus on is to produce an interesting and fun game and to let the players make their choice,” Li stated, emphasizing that the quality of the game trumps genre considerations.
ZZZ distinguishes itself with its nostalgic, retro-inspired setting of New Eridu, a last bastion of civilization in a post-apocalyptic world. Li explained that the game’s aesthetic draws from childhood memories of arcades, VHS stores, and CD shops, aiming to share these experiences with today’s players.
The game’s narrative takes a unique approach, focusing on “ordinary” people in extraordinary circumstances rather than inherently heroic characters. “Nobody has to try and save the world,” Li noted, highlighting the game’s exploration of everyday value in a quirky urban story.
Addressing player feedback from closed beta tests, Li revealed that the team has refined the “Hollow Board” exploration system to cater to different playstyles. The game will offer both combat-focused options and more exploratory gameplay to satisfy diverse player preferences.
While the initial character roster of 15 may seem smaller compared to other HoYoverse titles, Li assured that quality takes precedence over quantity, with plans to expand the roster in future updates. He also hinted at the potential introduction of healing and support characters, as well as the development of a multiplayer battle mode.
In a surprising twist, HoYoverse has announced a global music collaboration with Grammy-winning DJ-Producer Tiësto and the renowned DJ duo Lucas & Steve. A 15-second teaser has been released, with full details of the partnership set to be revealed on July 2nd (UTC+8).
This collaboration aims to enhance ZZZ’s immersive experience for players worldwide, combining the game’s unique urban fantasy setting with world-class electronic music. Tiësto, a three-time DJ Magazine Top 100 DJ winner and Grammy recipient, brings his considerable talent and fame to the project, potentially introducing the game to a broader audience.
Zenless Zone Zero is scheduled for release on July 4th at 10:00 am (UTC+8) across PlayStation 5, PC, iOS, and Android platforms. Li expressed intentions to eventually release the game on all platforms, including Xbox and Switch.
