From ’90s Heartthrob to ‘The Bear’: Josh Hartnett’s Surprising Guest Role

Josh Hartnett, the ’90s teen idol known for his roles in “Pearl Harbor” and “Black Hawk Down,” has made a surprising appearance in the third season of FX’s critically acclaimed series “The Bear.” The actor’s guest role as Frank, fiancé to Richie’s ex-wife Tiffany, marks a significant moment in both the show’s narrative and Hartnett’s career trajectory.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hartnett revealed the intriguing backstory of how he landed the role, emphasizing the importance of maintaining industry relationships. The actor’s connection to “The Bear” dates back several years when he first met showrunner Chris Storer during the planning stages of a chef-themed movie that eventually evolved into the hit series.

“I called him immediately to say congratulations and tell him the show was incredible,” Hartnett recounted. This gesture of goodwill laid the groundwork for future collaboration. After a year of anticipation, Storer reached out through Hartnett’s agent with a role tailored for the actor.

Hartnett’s enthusiasm for the project was evident as he accepted the role before even reading the script, a testament to his trust in Storer and the show’s quality. “Our business can be cruel at times, and sometimes you get really lucky and meet people you really admire,” Hartnett remarked, highlighting the positive atmosphere on set.

The actor also provided insights into Storer’s efficient directing style, praising the quick pace of shooting and the cast’s deep understanding of their characters. This approach, Hartnett noted, allows for a refreshing and focused production process.

Hartnett’s character, Frank, sports nail polish, a detail that co-star Gillian Jacobs playfully linked to a possible collection of Taylor Swift friendship bracelets. Coincidentally, Hartnett recently attended Swift’s Eras Tour with his daughters, an experience he described as “wild” and “really sweet.”

This guest appearance adds Hartnett to the impressive roster of cameos in “The Bear,” joining the likes of Jamie Lee Curtis, Molly Ringwald, Bob Odenkirk, and Olivia Colman. The show’s ability to attract such high-profile guest stars speaks to its growing influence in the television landscape.

“The Bear,” which follows a renowned chef’s struggles to manage his late brother’s restaurant, has become one of modern television’s most talked-about series. Its unique blend of drama and comedy, coupled with exceptional writing and performances, has garnered critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase.

As “The Bear” continues to evolve, Hartnett’s guest role not only adds depth to the show’s narrative but also serves as a reminder of the enduring power of professional relationships in Hollywood. His journey from a chance meeting years ago to a memorable appearance in one of TV’s hottest shows underscores the unpredictable and often rewarding nature of the entertainment industry.

Fans can catch Josh Hartnett’s performance and all episodes of “The Bear” Season 3 now streaming on Hulu.
