Paramount Pictures has unveiled the first poster for Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated “Gladiator II,” set to hit theaters on November 22. The sequel to Scott’s Oscar-winning 2000 epic stars Paul Mescal as Lucius, the grown son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and nephew of the villainous Commodus from the original film.
Set 20 years after the events of “Gladiator,” the sequel takes place around 200 A.D. Mescal’s Lucius, once saved by Russell Crowe’s Maximus, now faces his own battles in the Roman Empire. The star-studded cast includes Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, and Joseph Quinn, with Quinn playing the new Caesar deciding the fates of warriors.
Footage screened at CinemaCon showed Mescal as a slave battling primates in the Colosseum, hinting at the intense action sequences to come. Mescal described the film to Vanity Fair as exploring “what human beings will do to survive, but also what human beings will do to win,” touching on themes of power, humanity, and love.
Director Ridley Scott, known for his innovative filmmaking, reportedly used up to eight cameras simultaneously to capture scenes. The production team recreated sets in Malta at the same location as the original film, aiming for authenticity and continuity.
David Scarpa, who worked with Scott on “Napoleon,” penned the screenplay. The film brings back key collaborators from the original, including costume designer Janty Yates and production designer Arthur Max.
As “Gladiator II” prepares to enter the arena, it faces competition from Universal’s “Wicked” and Angel Studios’ “Bonhoeffer” on its opening weekend. With its blend of star power, epic storytelling, and Scott’s directorial prowess, the sequel aims to captivate audiences and honor the legacy of its predecessor.
