Amazon MGM Studios has finalized key casting for its eight-episode television retelling of Stephen King’s 1974 novel “Carrie,” naming 20-year-old Canadian performer Summer H. Howell as the telekinetic lead while frequent collaborator Mike Flanagan oversees writing, direction and show-running duties.
Samantha Sloyan, known for “Midnight Mass,” will portray Carrie’s domineering mother Margaret White, joining a growing ensemble that features Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle, Amber Midthunder as gym teacher Miss Desjardin, Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, and Josie Totah as Tina.
Production is scheduled to begin in Vancouver in mid-June following Flanagan’s February pre-production start, with principal photography expected to run through mid-October. Amazon describes the project as a “bold, timely re-imagining” that will stream worldwide on Prime Video in 2026, though a precise premiere date has not been set.
The series marks the first scripted outing under Flanagan and producer Trevor Macy’s new overall deal with Amazon, extending a string of King adaptations by the filmmaker that already includes in-development versions of “The Life of Chuck” and “The Dark Tower.” Amazon executives said the partnership aims to “expand the genre slate with character-driven horror that resonates beyond traditional fans.”
King’s debut novel has spawned several screen versions, notably Brian De Palma’s 1976 film starring Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie and Kimberly Peirce’s 2013 remake headlined by Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore. Flanagan’s adaptation reportedly retains the prom-night carnage at the center of the story but updates the high-school setting and bullying dynamics to reflect contemporary social media pressures.
