It’s been 20 years since Halle Berry starred in the superhero movie Catwoman. Even though it wasn’t very well received, Berry looks back on the experience with an insightful perspective. When she recently talked to Entertainment Weekly, she opened up about both the good and bad parts of making that film.
Berry was upfront about some of Catwoman’s weaknesses, like how the villain she fought was just trying to sell bad face cream. “All the other superheroes save the world – this one just saved women from wrinkles,” she joked. Berry said back then she didn’t have as much input into the script. Things might be different if it was made today.
Even though Catwoman bombed at the box office, Berry took all the criticism in stride. She actually showed up in person to accept her Razzie award for Worst Actress! Berry got huge laughs telling the audience, “Thanks Warner Bros for the crappy movie!”
She said coming up with that speech was no easy task. Berry wanted to poke fun at herself without coming across as too mean. And she let the studio know she just planned to joke around with it, not get too upset.
Interestingly, Berry says she doesn’t think Catwoman was totally terrible. “I’m proud we even made it,” she stated. Being a Black woman in Hollywood, she’s used to facing adversity. One failed movie wasn’t going to get her down.
20 years later, Berry’s outlook is something we can all learn from. She owned up to Catwoman’s flaws but still celebrated her work. With her sense of humor and confidence, Halle Berry proves you don’t have to dwell on mistakes – you can grow and move forward instead.
