Russell T. Davies had some big news to share at San Diego Comic-Con last year. He confirmed the rumors about a new Doctor Who spin-off called “The War Between The Land And The Sea.” It’s gonna be a five-part mini-series focusing on those creepy sea monsters, the Sea Devils. They’ll be waging an all-out war against humanity.
The show is being written by Davies and Pete McTighe, and directed by Dylan Holes-Baker. It’s supposed to take place when the Doctor isn’t around to save the day. Instead, UNIT will have to deal with the Sea Devils coming out of the oceans all angry. Kate Stewart and Colonel Ibrahim will lead the fight to stop them.
While the basic idea sounds really cool, it could cause some problems if you think about it too much. See, in the last big Doctor Who anniversary special we found out that there are now two Doctors around at the same time. That means the Fourteenth Doctor, played by David Tennant, should still be hanging out on Earth when this sea monster war happens.
That’s gonna be awkward because it doesn’t seem like something the Doctor would ignore. Usually when there’s a big threat to the whole planet, the Doctor is right in the middle of stopping it. So how can the spin-off explain the Doctor not helping out at all? They’ll need to come up with a good reason for him being MIA during such a huge crisis.
Some ideas could be that it’s set in a alternate version of events, or takes place right before the regeneration into the Fourteenth Doctor. But each of those solutions would bring up their own continuity issues down the road.
This just goes to show that having two Doctors at the same time opens up a can of worms story-wise. As the Doctor Who universe gets more and more connected, the writers will have their work cut out making sure everything fits together smoothly. I’m curious to see how they handle this continuity conundrum!
