Good news for fans of the 1998 movie “Practical Magic” – a sequel is in the works! The producers have just announced that they’re adapting the 2021 novel “The Book of Magic” by Alice Hoffman into the new film. This has lots of folks excited to return to the magical world of the Owens family.
Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock are set to reprise their roles as sisters Gillian and Sally Owens. The original movie about the sisters battling evil forces has kept a loyal following over 25 years. Producer Denise Di Novi promises the sequel will honor both the characters from the book and movie.
The plot of “The Book of Magic” sounds mysterious. It starts with Aunt Jet only having a week to live. Then Gillian and Sally’s long lost brother reappears as Sally’s daughter gets mixed up in breaking a family curse. Their adventure takes them across the world from Paris to London.
While Kidman and Bullock are back, it’s unclear if Diane Wiest and Stockard Channing will also return as beloved aunts Jet and Franny. The script is being written by Akiva Goldsman, who wrote the 1998 movie screenplay and later won an Oscar.
Di Novi hopes to release the sequel in 2025, but the date may change as production gets underway. Fans can look forward to seeing their favorite witches again in theaters soon! In the meantime, you can read the new novel or rewatch the original “Practical Magic” streaming now. The magic is sure to continue with this highly-anticipated sequel.
