This summer’s anime shows are off to a weird start with “My Deer Friend Nokotan.” Right away, the bizarro comedy about a girl with deer antlers captured fans’ attention. The animation studio Wit and director Masahiko Ohta delivered a super strange premiere that left viewers super pumped for episode two.
The story follows Torako, an ex-troublemaker trying to be a good student now. But her normal life does a total 360 when she meets Nokotan. That’s what everyone calls the girl with deer antlers! In the first episode, “Girl Meets Deer,” the silly scenario had me laughing. At the same time, I was intrigued by Torako and Nokotan’s odd friendship unfolding.
Reviewers and audiences agree that balancing bizarre humor with heartfelt characters and laugh-out-loud visuals is no easy feat. But this show nails it! The animation is insanely creative too. In fact, some say it gives off similar vibes to the beloved “Nichijou” series. The catchy opening theme is also internet gold fueling the hype.
Giving voice to Nokotan is Megumi Han, known for her mecha role in “Armored Core VI.” She brings her talent to the deer girl, sparking fun reactions from mecha fans.
Although reception has been mad positive overall, not all is perfect. Fans reported issues with English subtitles provided by Remow instead of Crunchyroll. Mistranslations and bad grammar ruined some jokes. Here’s hoping they fix this glitch so episode two can shine without subtitles getting in the way!
Even with the subtitle snafu, “My Deer Friend Nokotan” stood out from the start thanks to how it turns weird into hilarious and heartwarming week after week. Anime fans of all kinds seem to dig its creativity. If they clean up those subs, this surprise hit could be one of summer 2024’s best.
