The new movie “Twisters” has been a big hit, making over $80 million its opening weekend! But people are also talking a lot about the ending. Director Lee Isaac Chung explains why he chose not to have the two main characters, Kate and Tyler, kiss at the very end.
Chung thinks audiences today aren’t as interested in seeing characters kiss on screen. When he tested different versions, including one with a kiss, people had very mixed reactions. He wanted the ending to focus more on Kate achieving her dream of being a storm tracker, not making it seem like her whole goal was just to end up kissing Tyler.
The director says fans can assume Kate and Tyler will kiss someday, but leaving it open-ended lets people imagine what could happen next. Actress Daisy Edgar-Jones said the no-kiss ending was “nice and refreshing.” Tyler actor Glen Powell joked that he was a little offended not to get a kiss!
Chasing storms is what really connects Kate and Tyler. Not showing a kiss fits with the movie being about their shared passion for meteorology. Actor Anthony Ramos even said he’d like to maybe do a sequel.
A lot of studies show younger audiences nowadays care more about characters pursuing their careers and developing as people, not just ending up in a romance. So the “Twisters” ending nods to changing tastes by keeping the focus on Kate achieving her goals in storm tracking. Overall, most viewers seem to be enjoying Chung’s new approach for the disaster movie genre. As the crowds keep coming to see “Twisters,” the debate around its ambiguous finale highlights how storytelling in big movies continues to evolve.
