Disney recently gave fans a glimpse at the upcoming live-action remake of the 2002 animated film “Lilo & Stitch” at their D23 Expo event. Attendees got to see Disney’s first look at the CGI model of Stitch, the mischievous alien experiment character, that will appear in the live-action movie. The remake is slated for release in summer 2025.
While plot details are still undisclosed, the new “Lilo & Stitch” film plans to follow the heartwarming story of a Hawaiian girl named Lilo who forms an unlikely friendship with Stitch. Just like the original animated film, themes of family and belonging are expected to remain central to the movie’s message. Maia Kealoha, a Native Hawaiian actress, will make her debut as Lilo. Veteran actor Chris Sanders, who co-directed the 2002 version, will return to voice Stitch.
The live-action remake is directed by Dean Fleischer Camp and written by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright. Disney aims to recapture the heart and humor of the animated classic while introducing Lilo and Stitch’s story to a new generation. Sydney Agudong, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Magnussen, Courtney B. Vance, and Tia Carrere make up the supporting cast. Principal photography is underway on location in Maui.
At the reveal, Disney showed off the CGI model of Stitch which blends elements from his animated design with a more realistic look fit for live-action. Fans seemed happy with how closely the character emulates his cartoon self while adapting to the new format. The live-action “Lilo & Stitch” is one of many Disney animated classics being reimagined, following remakes such as “The Lion King” and “The Little Mermaid.”
By slotting the movie for a summer 2025 window, Disney has positioned “Lilo & Stitch” as a potential blockbuster. Until its release date is announced, fans can rewatch the 2002 film and related content on Disney+. The first look at CGI Stitch marks a milestone and builds excitement for the fresh take on this beloved Disney story.
