Kaitlyn Dever Faces Intense Security Measures While Filming The Last of Us Season 2

Kaitlyn Dever, the actress portraying Abby in the second season of HBO’s “The Last of Us” series, required extra protection from security personnel while filming due to concerns over the character’s controversial nature. Abby divides fans of the original video game for her role in important story events. Isabela Merced, who plays Dina in the show, explained that Dever faced real-world backlash risks due to some fans’ inability to separate fiction from reality.

“The Last of Us,” based on the acclaimed survival game franchise, follows Joel and Ellie’s journey across a post-pandemic United States. The first TV season earned praise for its faithful adaptation and emotional storytelling. Season two, premiering in 2025, focuses on new characters including Abby. Within the game’s narrative, Abby’s storyline prompts mixed reactions from players ranging from admiration to hostility.

Given Abby’s notoriety, the production provided enhanced security for Dever. In an interview, Merced noted that “There are so many strange people in this world, because there are people that actually genuinely hate Abby.” While Abby is fictional, some have threatened actors for their roles. Dever’s safety became a priority due to this potential for backlash.

Despite facing challenges like the recent loss of her mother, Dever has received praise from co-workers. Merced called Dever “a cool person who does not get phased by things” and deserves recognition for staying focused amid personal struggles. Dever’s colleagues have supported her through playing such a divisive role.

Actors who portray morally complex characters often face intense scrutiny that blurs fiction and reality. Fan passion drives success but also enables online harassment in some cases. As “The Last of Us” pushes boundaries, it highlights the need for separating performers from their on-screen roles. Anticipation remains high as Dever brings Abby to life when season two releases in late 2025. For now, viewers can look forward to the challenges and emotionally-driven story ahead.
