Oscar-nominated actress Anna Kendrick will make her directorial debut with the new Netflix film “Woman of the Hour.” The film tells the true story of Cheryl Bradshaw, a woman who selected serial killer Rodney Alcala as her date on the game show “The Dating Game” in 1978. Kendrick both directs and stars in the movie, which had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2023.
The film explores Bradshaw’s frightening encounter with Alcala and the context of 1970s pop culture. Alcala, a convicted sex offender at the time, used his charm and photography skills to prey on victims during a long killing spree. Kendrick’s film examines how Alcala crossed paths with Bradshaw in such a public and unexpected way. Daniel Zovatto plays Alcala and is poised for critical acclaim in the disturbing role.
Netflix will release “Woman of the Hour” to streaming on October 18, 2024. A new trailer shows a tense date scene between Kendrick and Zovatto’s characters set in a tacky tropical bar. Subtle cues in their interaction, like a forced laugh or drink, hint at the real danger present. In addition to Kendrick and Zovatto, the movie also features Tony Hale, Nicolette Robinson, and Pete Holmes in supporting roles.
Written by Ian McDonald and produced by Roy Lee and Miri Yoon, Kendrick’s film navigates the complex issues of true crime and psychological thriller genres. As the director, producer and star, audiences will be interested to see Kendrick translate her acting experience behind the camera for her first time at the helm. With its examination of 1970s television and a chilling true story, “Woman of the Hour” provides an unsettling addition to Netflix’s upcoming fall lineup. Kendrick’s film debut contends for awards attention after premiering to acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival.
