The John Wick film series is expanding with the upcoming spin-off movie “Ballerina.” Scheduled for release on June 6, 2025, the action thriller will star Ana de Armas as the new lead character Eve Macarro. Eve was formerly a ballet dancer who became an assassin seeking revenge for the murder of her family. The movie is set between the events of “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” and the upcoming “John Wick: Chapter 4.”
The newly released trailer introduces viewers to Eve’s backstory and shows her engaging in several intense fight scenes using ballet-inspired techniques. In one scene, Eve slices an opponent’s neck with an ice skate during a fight. Another trailer moment depicts Eve battling a flamethrower-wielding enemy with a high-powered water hose.
Fans will also get to see the return of John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves. According to screenwriter Shay Hatten, Reeves will have a substantial role and not just a cameo appearance. The trailer hints at an encounter between Eve and John Wick towards the end.
Longtime franchise actors Ian McShane, Anjelica Huston, and the late Lance Reddick will reprise their roles from previous John Wick films in supporting capacities. Newcomers to the series include Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Norman Reedus in undisclosed roles.
Len Wiseman, known for directing the Underworld franchise, will helm Ballerina. The film continues the John Wick story following last year’s success of “John Wick: Chapter 4,” which made over $440 million globally. It also expands the franchise’s television presence after the recently debuted Peacock prequel series “The Continental.”
As the first John Wick spin-off, “Ballerina” offers audiences a new perspective on the secret world of assassins through the eyes of Eve Macarro. Backed by the franchises’ creative team and star-studded cast, the film looks to continue entertaining fans with impressive action and deeper exploration of the John Wick universe when it premieres next summer.
