The latest episode of “The Penguin,” titled “Inside Man,” took viewers deeper into the complex relationships and criminal schemes of Gotham City. Director Craig Zobel, who helmed the first three episodes, offered insight into some pivotal character-driven moments from the episode.
One notable scene depicts Sofia Falcone undergoing trauma therapy called EMDR at Arkham Asylum. Zobel explained the set was carefully modeled after the interview room in “The Batman” to maintain continuity. Sofia struggles to adjust after her release, shown sleeping in a closet instead of her bedroom due to lasting psychological impacts. “She had gotten used to sleeping a certain way and felt foreign in her bedroom,” Zobel said.
As Sofia grapples with her reputation, the show explores her gradual acceptance of being seen as a “monster.” Zobel suggested, “If no one believes she isn’t a monster, she might as well get the privileges of being one.” This promises added complexity as her character develops.
Meanwhile, Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot works to turn the Falcone and Maroni crime families against each other. A hijacking scene took intense planning and was filmed over two nights using matchbox cars and props to achieve realism.
The episode also examines Oz’s relationship with Victor, culminating in a tense moment where Oz forces Victor to dig a grave. According to Zobel, this pivotal scene questions Victor’s future in the criminal underworld.
Farrell brings dashes of dark humor to Oz through realistic character touches, like drinking Pepto-Bismol straight from the bottle or navigating street etiquette. These moments provide brief relief amidst the intense drama.
As the series progresses, viewers can expect further complications in Oz’s schemes as Sofia embraces her darker side and Victor reconsiders his path. New episodes of “The Penguin” air weekly on HBO Max.
