Hollywood stars Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz will team up for a new action thriller film directed by Marc Webb. Titled “Day Drinker,” the movie follows a cruise ship bartender embroiled in a criminal conspiracy after encountering a mysterious regular customer. Depp and Cruz have previously starred together in several box office hits, including “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Blow.”
Produced by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of the successful “John Wick” franchise, the script comes from writer Zach Dean known for films like “Fast X.” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Adam Fogelson praised the creative team, saying the film “combines a commercially appealing concept with unexpected twists through an exciting story.”
The announcement comes after Depp’s legal victory earlier this year against ex-wife Amber Heard. His role in “Day Drinker” marks Depp’s return to a major Hollywood studio project for the first time since 2018’s “Fantastic Beasts” installment. Though Depp’s French film “Jeanne du Barry” received mixed critical reviews in 2020, audiences strongly supported it, demonstrating continued interest in the actor.
For director Webb, “Day Drinker” follows recent work on Disney’s upcoming “Snow White” live-action adaptation. Cruz is also set to star in Michael Mann’s racing biopic “Ferrari” and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s upcoming drama “The Bride!” Lionsgate and production company 30West are partnering on multiple films including “Power Ballad” starring Paul Rudd.
International sales of “Day Drinker” will begin at the American Film Market in November. Lionsgate and 30West oversees development and production as the studio plans an ambitious global release for the thriller.
