JoJo Eusebio is making his directorial debut with the upcoming action comedy “Love Hurts.” Eusebio has spent nearly three decades coordinating stunts and choreography for blockbuster movies. He saw the directorial transition as a natural progression in his career.
The film stars Ke Huy Quan, known for his role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” as Marvin Gable. Gable is a successful real estate agent whose life changes when an ex-partner contacts him. Ariana DeBose co-stars as Rose, Gable’s former associate who is now a notorious crime lord.
The story follows Gable as he’s forced to confront his violent criminal past. He must face off against his brother Knuckles, played by Daniel Wu, who takes over the crime family business. Eusebio tailored the script to highlight Quan’s martial arts skills and action experience from his Hong Kong film career.
Despite being new to action roles, DeBose impressed the filmmakers in rehearsals. Her dance background helped her learn fight choreography quickly. “She understands rhythm, timing, and spacing during fights,” Eusebio noted.
Former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch also joins the cast in his first action movie part. Additional cast members are Mustafa Shakir, Lio Tipton, Rhys Darby, André Eriksen, and Sean Astin.
The film is slated for release on Valentine’s Day 2023. Eusebio aims to blend intense action sequences with genuine heartfelt moments. He took influence from other successful films by 87North Productions, the company behind “Love Hurts.” If well received, Eusebio suggests it may spawn a franchise like their other action hits.
Audiences can expect an R-rated offering on February 14th that delivers both brutal fight scenes and emotional storyline centered around Gable confronting his past.
