The Starz network has decided to end its historical drama “The Serpent Queen” following the airing of its second season finale in August. The show told the story of Catherine de’ Medici and her rise to become the powerful Queen of France in the 16th century. Starz launched the series in 2022 to explore the life of Catherine de’ Medici and her influence over French politics for over 30 years through intriguing plots and dynamic characters.
Based on a book by historian Leonie Frieda, “The Serpent Queen” starred Samantha Morton as Catherine de’ Medici. It traced her journey from an Italian teenager married into French royalty to a shrewd leader who dominated decisions shaping France. The eight-episode second season examined Catherine’s challenges to maintain control while facing threats, family disputes, and political maneuvering against her.
Created by screenwriter Justin Haythe, the drama featured an ensemble cast led by Amrita Acharia, Enzo Cilenti, Ruby Bentall, and Danny Kirrane. Production companies Lionsgate Television and 3 Arts Entertainment oversaw the project. Francis Lawrence, known for directing “The Hunger Games” movies, served as an executive producer along with Erwin Stoff.
Despite cancelling “The Serpent Queen”, Starz is not abandoning historical royal sagas. The network plans a new series about Queen Elizabeth I starring Minnie Driver, who played the monarch in a guest role during season two. Produced by Haythe and Stoff, it seems poised to continue their collaboration with Starz exploring influential female figures.
Starz strives to offer “female forward” programming appealing to women aged 24-54 interested in notable women of the past. With modern elements like anachronistic music and breaking the fourth wall, “The Serpent Queen” aimed to retell 16th century French court intrigue in an accessible way. Its conclusion covered the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, a pivotal event in French religious wars. While Catherine’s saga has ended, Starz commits to illuminating powerful women’s histories through compelling original shows.
