The 82nd Golden Globe Awards were a lively celebration of different kinds of people and great acts. The night’s top film winners were Netflix’s Spanish-language song Emilia Pérez and The Brutalist immigrant story. The night’s top TV winners were the historical drama Shōgun.
Emilia Pérez led the evening, winning four awards, including Best Picture—Musical or Comedy. The film was nominated for ten awards and won three. Zoe Saldaña won Best Supporting Female Actor. Saldaña’s win was especially impressive because she beat out co-star Selena Gomez and Wicked star Ariana Grande.
Karla Sofía Gascón, who plays Emilia Pérez, made history when she became the first openly transgender woman nominated for a Golden Globe. Is it possible to put us in jail?” she asked during her Best Picture victory speech. You can hit us. You can’t take away our soul, fight, or who we are.” The clothes Gascón was wearing looked like Buddhist robes. He said, “I am who I am, not who you want me to be.”
Three big awards went to The Brutalist, a low-budget drama about a Holocaust survivor coming to America to become an architect. It won Best Picture – Drama, Adrien Brody won Best Actor, and Brady Corbet won Best Director. Brody, who won a Globe for The Pianist, called the film “a story about the human capacity for creation” and hoped it would motivate immigrants.
The FX show Shōgun made history in TV dramas by winning big awards, including Best Drama Series. Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Tadanobu Asano all won acting awards, which helped the show continue to do well after its record-breaking showing at the Emmys.
Fernanda Torres’s unexpected win for Best Female Actor in a Drama for “I’m Still Here” was another memorable moment. She beat out well-known stars like Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, and Kate Winslet. Demi Moore was awarded Best Female Actor in a Musical or Comedy for her role in The Substance, in which she faced doubts in the acting world and overcame them.
Another great show on Netflix was Baby Reindeer, which won two awards, including Best Limited Series. Veteran actors Jodie Foster and Colin Farrell were praised for their parts in True Detective: Night Country and The Penguin.
Nikki Glaser made history as the first female host of the Golden Globes on her own. She brought her trademark wit to the evening. She told the crowd she wouldn’t do the same thing that went viral at last year’s Tom Brady roast. Several films considered contenders, including Anora, Dune: Part Two, and A Complete Unknown, didn’t win any awards at the event.
If you watched the Golden Globes, you know that the Academy Awards nominations will be announced on January 17.
