South Korean actress Kim Sae-ron, whose career began at the age of nine, was found dead at her home in Seongdong-gu, Seoul, on Sunday. A friend discovered her body after she missed a scheduled meeting, prompting police to investigate the circumstances. Authorities have ruled out any signs of foul play, with one official suggesting that her death may have been self-inflicted.
Kim, born in 2000, gained recognition for her role in A Brand New Life (2009), which secured her a spot at the Cannes Film Festival, and for her performance in The Man from Nowhere (2010). Her work extended to both film and television, including titles such as The Neighbor (2012), A Girl at My Door (2014), and the Netflix action series Bloodhounds (2023).
In May 2022, Kim was involved in a drink-driving incident in Seoul’s Gangnam District. While driving under the influence, she lost control of her vehicle and collided with an electrical transformer, causing damage to nearby establishments. She was fined 20 million KRW and had her driver’s license revoked. The incident attracted widespread public attention and led her to step away from acting for a period.
Reports indicate that Kim had been planning a return to the industry. An acquaintance mentioned that she was preparing to adopt a new stage name, Kim Ah-im, and had ambitions to open a café alongside her acting comeback. Her upcoming projects included the film Guitar Man, which was in post-production, and a stage production titled Dongchimi, from which she later withdrew.
Director Shin Jae Ho of Guitar Man recalled his first impression of Kim during a script reading, describing her as warm and sincere. Colleagues expressed surprise at her passing, noting that she had shown determination in her efforts to rebuild her career following the setback.
