A new comedy series on Prime Video is challenging traditional family dynamics with a heartwarming story of reconciliation and understanding. “Clean Slate,” developed by comedian George Wallace and featuring Emmy-nominated actress Laverne Cox, explores the complex relationship between a father and his transgender daughter.
The series follows Harry Slate (Wallace), a car wash owner in Mobile, Alabama, who reconnects with his child after 23 years of separation. The unexpected twist: his son has transitioned and now identifies as Desiree, played by Cox.
“I wondered, what if I had a son that left home and came back 23 years later?” Wallace said. Cox completed the thought: “And that child says, ‘I was never your son, I was always your daughter.'”
The show delves into themes of family acceptance, personal growth, and community, particularly within the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. For Cox, who grew up in Mobile, the setting carries deep personal significance. “The church evoked a lot when I walked in,” she shared. “There’s so much great comedy in the church, and so much drama.”
While addressing contemporary challenges faced by the transgender community, the series maintains a warm and humorous approach. Harry’s immediate acceptance of Desiree sets a positive tone, though he initially struggles with pronoun usage and navigating their relationship.
The first season also explores a romantic subplot between Desiree and Mack (Jay Wilkison), Harry’s second-in-command at the car wash. Wallace highlights their relationship’s development as a key narrative element.
The show arrives at a critical time, addressing gender expression and identity amid increasing legislative restrictions. Cox emphasizes the resilience of the transgender community, stating, “Nothing the government will do will keep us from our gender-affirming care.”
With an eight-episode first season ending on a “juicy cliffhanger,” the series leaves viewers anticipating potential future storylines. While a second season remains uncertain, Cox confirms they are prepared and have additional story arcs planned.
