Academy Award-winning actor Ke Huy Quan is set to headline Universal Pictures’ upcoming action film “Love Hurts,” a journey that almost didn’t happen without legendary director Steven Spielberg’s encouragement.
Quan, who rose to international fame with his role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” initially rejected the lead role due to deep-seated self-doubt. “I thought this wasn’t for me,” Quan told Empire magazine. “I believed action heroes had to look like The Rock or Stallone.”
The turning point came during an industry event conversation with Spielberg. Struggling with post-Oscar pressure and fear of disappointing fans, Quan was hesitant about his next project. Spielberg arranged a lunch meeting that changed everything.
“They had elaborate slides showing me as the main character,” Quan recalled. “That’s when I realized they wanted to create a different kind of action hero – something new.”
The film, directed by “John Wick” stunt coordinator Jonathan Eusebio, follows a man drawn back into crime after receiving a mysterious letter from a supposedly dead former partner. Quan co-stars with Ariana DeBose in this high-stakes narrative.
Committed to authenticity, Quan underwent three months of intense physical training, performing his own stunts except for wire-rigged sequences. The demanding role took a significant physical toll. “Every day, I would soak in a salt bath for half an hour,” he said. “Halfway through, I told my wife I didn’t think I could do this again.”
However, after seeing the film’s trailer, Quan’s enthusiasm reignited. “I can’t wait to do this again,” he admitted.
The role represents another milestone in Quan’s career resurgence, with upcoming appearances in “The Electric State” and “Fairytale in New York” promising more exciting opportunities.
Quan’s transformation from self-doubting actor to action hero demonstrates the power of mentorship and believing in oneself, proving that Hollywood narratives can always be reimagined.
